How to Create Voice Overs for Video

How to Create Voice Overs for Video

Before videos, images and text, our main tool for communication was our voice. Now in 2020, despite endless technological advances, voice still packs a punch. It’s why we’ll watch 80 minutes of penguin footage if Morgan Freeman narrates it. Voice overs add value to videos by communicating in a way that forms genuine connections with viewers and elevates visuals.

Voice overs can be added to all types of video projects from ads to webinars. Since we’re the go-to for online video editing, we thought it was time voice overs could be created in Clipchamp. There’s just one catch: not everyone’s vocals match up to Morgan. That’s why we’ve developed our AI voice over generator, a tool that lets you turn text into speech in Clipchamp using AI technology.

In this blog post, we’ll be breaking down the basics of voice overs and giving you a tutorial on how to make them using Clipchamp’s AI voice over generator. In it we’ll cover:

  • What is a voice over?

  • What is an AI voice over?

  • How to make a voice over video with Clipchamp’s AI voice over generator.

What is a voice over?

Voice overs are pretty much the modern day version of the narrator in a story book. In most cases a voice over (aka off-camera commentary) describes a production technique where a voice is used to narrate a story – they are heard but not seen.

However, rules are meant to be broken and sometimes voice overs are used to give voice to a character that might not be able to speak for themselves ... like a cat. In 2014 Buzzfeed Video and Purina produced "Dear Kitten", a video series promoting cat food that went viral for its feline voice over.

What is an AI voice over?

The voice overs we’ve discussed so far have been performed by people. In contrast, an AI voice over is created by AI technology in a computer. It works by turning your text to voice in a voice over generator.

Depending on the AI voice over generator you use, you can usually choose from a range of voices to meet your needs – male, female, formal or emotive, the choice is up to you. While you might associate AI with robotic sounds, modern AI (like what we've used to create our generator) is capable of producing realistic text to speech transformations.

Step 6. Adjust the text to fix pronunciation issues

Because the voice-over is artificially generated, you may need to adjust the way you spell things to get names or words to sound right.

For example, in this voice over below we removed the comma to improve the pacing and changed the spelling of “maybe” to “maybee” to get the correct pronunciation. Once we were happy with the voice over we simply clicked Add to Media Library. Have a watch.

Step 7. Add your voice over files to the timeline and edit them

To add your voice over files to your project, simply drag and drop them from the Media Library to the Timeline. From here, you can use tools like Split and Trim to make further edits.
