Popular video encoding Mac app HandBrake has been compromised with malware after hackers replaced the usual installer file with a Trojan virus.
Users who downloaded the app between the 2nd – 6th May this week have a 50% chance of being infected with the Trojan. To find out whether your Mac has been infected, open your Activity Monitor application and check to see if you have a process called “Activity_agent”. If so, this means you have been infected, and you should take these steps to remove the malware.
Surprisingly, many people still have the belief that Macs can’t get viruses, and Apple does little to inform people that this simply isn’t true.
There have been incidents in the past where Macs have been infected with malware, for instance the malicious software called Flashback exploited a security flaw in Java in order install itself on Macs. There have been other problems since then, and there will likely continue to be more in the future.
While macOS does have built in safety mechanisms, it is not impossible for someone with the right motivation and resources to write malware for macOS. And even with this security in place, it isn’t enough to ensure your Macs safety when dealing with the web.
There is no guarantee that Java and Flash player have well designed security, and downloading third party software always comes with the risk that it may contain malware. So is there a safer alternative to HandBrake that doesn’t require downloading any software?
Here’s the safer alternative to HandBrake
