Tips for filming with a webcam recorder

Here are some tips to help you successfully create an online presentation using a webcam.

Wear suitable clothing

Surprisingly, your outfit isn’t just to impress your audience. Make sure to steer clear of wearing bright, fluorescent colours or pure white. Powerful colours and bright patterns can disrupt the functionality of your webcam quality, making it difficult for viewers to focus on your face. If you are only using a voice recorder, you do not need to worry about this step.

Stay in the centre of your screen

Most of us walk around, sway side to side and use big hand gestures when giving a presentation. This may be useful for in person presentations, but webcams don’t like constant or sudden movements. Too much movement can cause the video to break up, freeze, lag or become blurry.

Make sure the audience can see you

The success of an online presentation generally depends on if your audience can see you clearly or not. There should always be a light source in front of you (a window or artificial light) so your face can be seen without any shadows or darkness. The light should never be behind you. Don’t go too bright though, or else your camera will become over exposed and white.

Set up a simple background

Always test your filming location before recording your online presentation. You don’t want people walking around or distracting objects in the background. Make your background look professional. A home office, living room, bookshelves or plants are great background ideas.

How to create a presentation using webcam

Filming a remote presentation is easy when using a webcam. Learn how to create an online presentation using Clipchamp Create’s online webcam tool.  If you want further information, check out our detailed webcam recorder tutorial.

Step 1. Create a Clipchamp Create account

Log into your existing Clipchamp Create account, or sign up for free today.

Step 1. Get started by creating a Clipchamp account

Step 2. Create a new project

Click Create a video button on the left side car. For online presentations, we recommend using Widescreen 16:9 ratio. This ratio is also best for uploading to YouTube, Vimeo or different video sharing platforms.

Step 2. Create a new project

Step 3. Allow computer access to webcam

The editor will automatically open. Once open, click Record Webcam. If you have not used this feature before, you may need to allow access. A Google Chrome pop up will appear in the top left corner of your screen. Click Allow to grant Clipchamp Create permission to use your microphone and camera. Your webcam will then automatically appear on your screen.

Step 3. Allow computer access to webcam

Step 4. Record your presentation

Click the red circle button to commence recording your online presentation. Remember, a single webcam recording can be no longer than 30 minutes. If you require a longer time period, record your presentation in intervals and save each video as you go. You can add the shorter clips to your timeline to save as a single video. Click the red circle button again to stop recording. Videos will automatically save to your Media Library within the editor. You can also save to a folder of your choice.

Step 4. Record your presentation

Instead of printing your script or just using powerpoint templates, split your computer screen. Make one half of your screen your webcam recorder, and the other half your powerpoint presentation. This will make it easier to present and not have to look down.

Step 4. Record your presentation part 2

Step 5. Add clips to timeline

Drag and drop your clips onto the timeline. You can add as many clips as you desire.

Step 5. Add clips to timeline

Step 6. Save online presentation video

Click Export when you are finished with your video. We recommend saving your video in 480p or 720p for fast uploading speed to social media or sending via email or chat room. If you are wanting a better quality for YouTube upload, save your video in 1080p. Click Continue and wait for your video to save. You can now send viewers your webcam video as well as your presentation slides or video.

Step 6. Save online presentation video

Step 7. Optional Picture In Picture Style Video

You are now ready to send your presentation video. If you want to go one step further, try editing your video using our Picture in Picture feature. This will allow you to present your slideshow video and your webcam recording on the same screen. Our How to Create Picture In Picture Guide will help you successfully create this style of video.

How to create a slideshow on Clipchamp Create

Your online webcam presentation will be accompanied with a video slideshow. Whether you want to talk about a product, teach a lesson or present a speech, having visuals so viewers can refer back to for more information is vital. You can create your webcam presentation and video slideshow all under the one roof. You can also make your existing powerpoint into a video.
