Disappearing videos… it’s a thing you need to get around if you want to excel with your social media presence. Since the dawn of Snapchat, social apps like Facebook and Instagram have raced to adopt the ‘story’ format, which allows you to post a vertical video that sits at the top of the app for 24 hrs, then disappears forever.

Stories are rapidly increasing in popularity as they differ from your usual video format.

A typical social media story is a more personal, behind the scenes look at unfolding events, and is less polished than a slick professional video. With Facebook’s recent launch of stories for business pages, there is now even more opportunity to capture the attention of viewers in a personal way. It’s of little surprise that the format is gaining popularity among brands around the world as an alternative to more classical mobile ads.

Let’s discover the easiest way to create vertical videos for stories, with Clipchamp’s free online video editor.

Here’s how to create vertical videos for stories

Step 1: Log in to Clipchamp Create

Create an account for free, or log in to your account to get started.

Step 2: Then, start a new project

You’ll want to select Vertical from the list of video dimensions. The corresponding aspect ratio is 9:16.

Step 3: Drop your videos into the library

Either use your own video, image and music files or browse our huge range of free footage in the stock library.

Step 4: Crop to fill if your original video is in landscape mode

Vertical video works best with videos filmed on your phone in portrait. But don’t worry if you have filmed in landscape (horizontal/ widescreen), simply select the video in the timeline and then click ‘Crop To Fill’ in the editing tools menu that comes up, which will automatically fit your video to the vertical ratio.

Step 5: Cut the video

Shorten the length of your video by dragging in the sides. Story videos should be under 20 seconds for Facebook and 15 seconds for Instagram. If your video is longer, cut and export your video in 15 second chunks and upload them all at once.

Step 6: Add some text

You can also add a message to your video by using the title slides.

Step 7: Export and share

And that’s already it, the last step is to export your video.

Ensure you keep the page open and visible otherwise exporting will pause or take a long time to load. Once it’s done it’s time to share your video to your social channels!

Happy creating 🙂
