How to Convert Video to GIF

Newsflash – GIFs are over 30 years old. Yes, the internet’s favourite image format is over three decades strong and it might be more popular than ever. Top search engine GIPHY boasts over 300 million daily active users and has integrations set up with platforms like Instagram, Twitter and even Clipchamp.
It’s pretty clear – GIFs are great, but they’re even better when they’re made from video. The file format is technically a moving stack of image frames but you can also easily convert a video to a GIF. The internet has been delivering us iconic video to GIF moments for years from our favourite shows, movies and even homemade clips. Now, you can join in and can easily convert your own videos to GIFs right here in Clipchamp!

Introducing Clipchamp’s GIF maker
GIF makers are one of the most in-demand tools on the internet, so it’s about time we created our own. You can now turn up to 30 seconds of video into a GIF in Clipchamp using our new GIF export option.

How to convert video to GIF with Clipchamp
In this example, we’ll be showing you how to create a short GIF from video files. Remember, you can also create GIFs from longer, edited videos by using short snippets (less than 30 seconds long).
Step 1. Log into your Clipchamp account
Log in to get started, or create an account by signing up to a free account.

Step 2. Create a video
Hit the Create a video button and select an aspect ratio for your GIF to get started.

Step 3. Add your footage
Upload your own video to the editor by clicking +Add media and +Browse files, it will appear in your Media Library once it’s finished uploading.
Alternatively, you can search our Stock Library (like we’ve done in this example). Simply click the Stock button, search for a video and hit the + button to add it to your Media Library once you’ve made a selection.

Step 4. Drag and drop footage and start editing
Drag and drop your footage to the timeline to begin editing. From here, you can edit your video using Clipchamp’s tools and features. Note: GIFs play without sound, so make sure you’re aware of this when working on your project.

Step 5. Export your project as a GIF
Once you’re happy with your creation, it’s time to export it as a GIF! Click the Export button, then select the GIF tab and hit Continue. You’ll notice the GIF is exporting in 240p (a relatively low resolution), that’s the standard for GIFs and part of its low-fi charm!

Step 6. Share your GIF with the world!
