To assist our much-loved Help article Speeding up or slowing down a video, we have created a step-by-step tutorial on how to slow down a video using our new and improved video editor. 

Step 1. Log into Clipchamp or sign up for free

To slow down video using our video speed controller, you will first need to log into your Clipchamp account. If you do not have an account, sign up today for free.

Step 2. Create a new video online project

Select the + Create a Video purple button at the top right corner of your screen. Once clicked, the editor will automatically open. You can change the video ratio by clicking on one of the 6 video ratios. We are using widescreen 16:9 for the purpose of this tutorial. Rename your video project by clicking the Untitled Video box.

Step 3. Upload your video clips or select stock footage

Stock Footage

Select the Stock Video button on the left sidebar. The Stock library tab will open. Search a specific genre using a keyword or scroll through our folders. To add the video to My Media, click on the + add button at the bottom right corner of the preview video. The stock will automatically download to your timeline and also appear in the My Media tab. 

Personal footage

To upload your personal footage, click on the + white button on the editor. Select the video clips you would like to use in your promo video. You can also Drag and Drop your video file into the library.

Step 4. How to slow down a video using Clipchamp speed controls

Click on your timeline clip so the entire video is highlighted green. Six different tabs will appear above your video preview. Layout, Transform, Filters, Adjust colours, Fade and Speed. To slow down video and adjust the speed, you can find our video speed controller under the Speed tab. Click on the Speed tab to open the speed controls, then click Slow. You can choose between 0.1x - 0.5x speed controls. Drag the white cursor left and right. Adjusting the video playback speed will increase the length of the clip in the timeline.

FAQ 1: Can I slow down only a section of my video clip?

Yes! Users can change the speed of a single clip multiple different times. All you need to do is split your clip into different sections using the Split tool. Move your cursor down the timeline and split the clip into 3 different sections. Select the newly split clip and adjust the speed accordingly.
