Online video has come a long way since 2005. Starting with the rise of YouTube, online video has rapidly changed over the past decade. Clipchamp has put together a list of video milestones in this infographic, covering the history of online video over the past 12 years.

Key social media players like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat all jumped on the video train and adapted their platforms to utilize video and better analyze the way users engage with it. Online series started to win Emmy Awards, and a new awards ceremony was created altogether to honor online web series from 2008.

Over the years, marketers have turned more and more towards optimizing video content for sharing rather than attempting to create viral videos. 360 degree and live videos are now taking the internet by storm.

Facebook currently has over 1.71 billion users who can be directly targeted by companies through Facebook Live and video advertising. With 4 billion videos being played daily on Facebook and YouTube, video has clear potential to take over the internet and replace written text.

So how exactly has the history of online video developed over the years?

Check out this detailed infographic that explores just how much the history of online video has changed over time. If you’re wondering what the future holds for online video, feel free to have a look at our previous blog post about the topic (link above).
