In January 2016, Google announced that their YouTube Webcam Capture would be shut down. It allowed you to take videos with your computer’s webcam and upload them to your YouTube channel.

Luckily for anyone who was using it and is now looking for an alternative, our free web app Clipchamp fills the gap to record from webcam on desktop and laptop computers. This works on all operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks.

Clipchamp lets you record webcam videos of up to 5 minutes length and upload them straight to YouTube. It runs inside your browser without any need to install or download extra software or plugins.

To use it, just go to clipchamp.com, click the “Record Video” button and you’re good to go.

We also built a couple of additional features into the app that improve on the functionality YouTube Capture was able to offer:

  • Save recorded videos to your computer
  • Upload recorded videos to Google Drive, Facebook, Vimeo in addition to YouTube
  • Record videos in 360p, 480p, 720p
  • Compress videos before uploading them for much faster uploads

The YouTube record from webcam option was popular in the education sector and we’ve already been recommended as a good alternative by various bloggers in the edtech space:

We’ve also seen some nice feedback from teachers and students using our app in the classroom:

Clipchamp is free in its current version and available at clipchamp.com as well as in the Chrome Web Store. Happy recording 🙂
