When you’re capturing a video in the spur of the moment, you’re probably not thinking about how the scene is framed. But framing – the way the action you’re filming sits inside the ‘frame’ of the camera – is very important for making a video engaging.

Cropping videos made easy with Clipchamp

If you’re filming your dog doing something adorable, you want them to be the focus, not a small feature against the background. The best way to fix this problem is by cropping your video, but what’s the easiest way to do this without having to install a program or slowly uploading your video to an online editor?

Our recommended solution is to use the video editor Clipchamp Create – it runs entirely in the browser and lets you easily crop video online, however you don’t even have to upload your video before you can start editing it. The way Clipchamp works is unique insofar as it lets you edit a video in the browser while keeping the file itself safe on your computer. This also works for operations such as cropping.

Here are the steps to crop video online quickly

So, here’s how you can crop video online the easy way:

Step 1: Sign up for a free Clipchamp account

To get started, register for a free account at app.clipchamp.com. This only takes a matter of seconds, as you can instantly create an account using an existing Google or Facebook account. Email & password is another option.

register for a Clipchamp Create account to crop videos

Step 2: Create a new project

Once you’re signed in, you’ll find yourself in Clipchamp’s Create editor.

This is an easy-to-use interface where you can make changes to your video with a few clicks. Start a new project by clicking here:

Now, name your project and choose the best aspect ratio.

For example, if you’re going to post the video to Instagram the best aspect would be 1:1, which is a simple square:

select an aspect ratio for your editing project

Step 3: Add your video

Once the project is created, you’ll be taken to Clipchamp’s editor.

You can then add the video you want to crop with a few clicks. First, click ‘Add Media’ in the top left of the screen:

add videos to the project to start editing them

Which will bring up this screen:

add videos to the project

You can now either drag and drop a video file or click ‘Browse my files’ to select one from your computer.

There’ll be no waiting for the file to upload, so you can get editing straight away! This works with all kinds of formats so you can crop MP4, WebM or MOV videos all in the same project.

Step 4: Select the video in the editing timeline

Once added, your video will appear in the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

Select the video in there, which will bring up a number of editing options in a new menu:

select the video in the timeline to crop it

Step 5: Choose one of the cropping options

Now that your video is selected you can easily crop your video to fit the frame in two ways.

Selecting Auto Fit will add black bars to the top and bottom of the video to make it fit in the case of the 1:1 aspect ratio and if your input video’s original ratio is 16:9

If you select Crop to Fill, the video will be cropped to fit the new ratio – in this case effectively zooming the image:

select crop-to-fill to adjust the video to the aspect ratio of your project

In addition to cropping, feel free to make use of Create’s other editing tools to get your video just right.

Step 6: Hit Export Video to save the cropped file

When you’re done, the last step is to hit the “Export Video” button and go through the exporting process, after which you can save the cropped video to your computer.

So, as you can see, cropping your video online doesn’t have to be difficult! Our editor makes it a quick process without any complicated overheads.
