A picture is worth a thousand words. By that logic, we think it’s safe to say a screen recording is priceless. This method of screen capture is an excellent tool for all communicators—from small businesses advertising their eCommerce stores to creators making online tutorials.
A screen recording allows you to share your laptop or computer screen with anyone and immerse viewers in an experience from your point of view. Importantly, it allows you to share your screen when it’s not physically possible to do so in person, something more relevant than ever at this time.
We think screen recording is so essential that, here at Clipchamp, we’ve launched a free online screen recorder. Now, recording your screen and editing the footage into a video is simple enough to complete in a single web browser.
Read on to explore how screen recording works and how to screen record using Clipchamp’s free online video editor.
How does screen recording work?
Screen recorders work by securely accessing your computer and recording the screen with audio of your choice. Think of it like a regular video, except the recording happens right inside your computer (and outside if you're recording a voice-over).
Forget about paying for screen recording software that requires you to download a program. Clipchamp’s online screen recorder works simultaneously in your browser, for free, and no external downloads are necessary.
How to screen record online using Clipchamp
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to screen record using Clipchamp’s online screen recorder.
Step 1. Log in to your Clipchamp account or sign up for free
To start screen recording, log in to your Clipchamp account. If you don’t have an account already, sign up for free.

Step 2. Create a new video
Click on the purple + Create a video button at the top right of the editor homepage. The editor will automatically open. Rename your video by clicking Untitled video.

Step 3. Locate screen recording tool
On the left toolbar, click on the Record & create tab. Four different recording options will appear including Text to speech. Click on Screen recording. A red recording button with a time duration will appear at the bottom left of the editor.

Step 4. Start screen recording
Click on the red record button to commence recording. The Choose what to share pop-up window will appear. Click on the Entire screen, Window, or Chrome tab to screen record. We have selected the Chrome tab.
Once you have finished screen recording your desired Chrome tab, click on the blue Stop recording button. Head back over to Clipchamp’s online video editor tab, and click save and edit. If you’re not happy with your screen recording, click retake screen recording.
Once saved, your screen recording will appear under the My media tab and on your timeline.

Step 5. Edit screen recording
Chances are you made a few mistakes throughout your recording, here’s where you can fix that up by trimming your clip. Note, if your clip is long you might need to click the Zoom to fit button. You can easily trim the beginning and end of your clip by selecting it and dragging in the green bars on either side.
Alternatively, if you prefer a more precise technique, you can drag the white scrubber to any point in the timeline and select Split to split the clip, then select and Delete the clip you’d like to discard.

Step 6. Add an intro and stock footage
Give your screen recording an intro using Clipchamp’s endless stock video library and fun range of text/titles. Click on the Stock video or Stock image to add a background intro clip. Search through the categories by typing in a keyword into the search bar, or scroll through the folders. Once you have found a clip you like, click on the + symbol to add the footage to your timeline. Freely move the clip around your timeline to your desired location. Trim footage accordingly.
Next, click on the Text tab. Drag and drop your desired intro title onto the timeline or click the + symbol. Trim your title to be the same length as your background clip. Edit the title by using the editing options above the video preview.

Step 7. Save screen recording
Once you have finished editing your screen recording, click on the purple Export button in the top right corner of the editor. Saving options will appear. We recommend saving in 720p or 1080p for maximum quality. Click Continue when ready to proceed.
Side-note: information about screen recording quality can help you understand the factors that influence your recording's visual appearance.
Share your video directly with friends and family using Clipchamp’s easy sharing integrations like Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Pinterest, and YouTube.
