‘IGTV’, or Instagram TV, is a YouTube-like platform where people can post long form videos. Similar to YouTube, IGTV creators have channels which can be followed by users. The major difference from YouTube is that videos are in vertical format (portrait).
Most basic video editors like iMovie only allow you to create videos in widescreen (landscape), so how do you create vertical videos for IGTV or adjut your existing videos to work on the platform?
First, let’s look at the IGTV video specs and then we’ll show you the easiest way to create IGTV videos using the Clipchamp Create online video editor.
IGTV Video Specs
According to Instagram’s help centre, IGTV videos must be between 15 seconds and 10 minutes long, in MP4 file format. Larger accounts and verified accounts can upload videos up to 60 minutes long, but they must be uploaded from a computer.
Video Resolution and Size
Videos should be vertical (not landscape) with an aspect ratio of 9:16.
Videos should have a minimum frame rate of 30 FPS (frames per second) and minimum resolution of 720 pixels.
The maximum file size for videos that are 10 minutes or less is 650MB. The maximum file size for videos up to 60 minutes is 3.6GB.
Unless you’re a professional video editor, creating amazing vertical videos in programs like Adobe Premiere Pro CC can be super challenging and take many hours to produce. Here’s how to create IGTV videos in vertical format without needing any technical skills or prior video editing knowledge.
How to create IGTV videos easily
Step 1: Log in to Clipchamp Create
Step 2: Start a new project
In the project overview screen that appears after the login, click on Start new project and give your video a title, then select Vertical from the drop down menu of video dimensions.
Step 3: Drop your videos into the library
If you recorded footage that you’d like to use in your project, drag and drop these videos, audio and image files into the library. To make use of professional stock video and audio in addition to your own or instead of your own, simply browse the huge range of footage in our stock library and select the clips that work for your story.
Step 4: Crop to fill
IGTV videos need to be vertical. Vertical videos look best when they’re filmed on your phone in portrait mode. But don’t worry if you have filmed in 16:9 landscape (horizontal/ widescreen), simply select the clip and then adjust it through the ‘Crop To Fill’ editing tool, which will automatically fit your video into the vertical screen size.
Step 5: Cut your video
Shorten the length of videos by dragging in the sides. Remember that IGTV videos must be between 15 seconds and 10 minutes long in total.
Step 6: Add some text
You can also add a message to your video by using the title slides, e.g. mention your location by using a lower third title over your video.
Step 7: Export and share
As the last step, you’ll need to export your video in either 720p or 1080p to meet IGTV requirements. Ensure you keep the page open and visible otherwise exporting will pause or take a long time to load. Export times will vary depending on the length of your video and your computer’s processing speed. After this, it’s time to share your video to your IGTV channel!
