How Clipchamp can help

Clipchamp Create is a powerful, easy-to-use video editor that makes splitting video files online a breeze. The app lets you work on video files from your computer without the need to upload them – this makes the process faster and means your files stay under your control the whole time. Whether you’re creating short or long-form video content, being able to quickly cut, e.g. to rearrange or delete segments is an essential tool when working with video.

Read on for our step-by-step guide to splitting video files with Clipchamp Create:

Step 1: Register a free account or log in if you’ve used Create before

You’ll need a Clipchamp account to get started. Signing up is very easy, all you need is a Facebook, Google, or email account!

Step 2: Creating your project

Once you’ve signed up, click on ‘Start a new project’, like so:

Next, choose a name for your project and select the best aspect ratio. For an Instagram post that would be 1:1. If you’re making a YouTube video and for the majority of other purposes, go with 16:9.

Name your video editing project

Step 3: Add video files to split or cut

Once your project is ready, click ‘Add Media’ to import your video files from your computer into the editing project:

Simply drag and drop files into the ‘Add Media’ window or click ‘Browse my files’ to select videos from your computer. With no need to wait while your videos upload, you can start editing right away! This also works with audio and image files.

Choose videos to split online

Step 4: Find where you want to split your video

The video file will appear in the timeline at the bottom of your screen. Now, simply drag the scrubber (that white vertical line with a circle on top) to where you want to split the video. You’ll be able to see the approximate time of the cut at the top of the timeline:

If you want to make your edit more precise, use the scrubber on the video preview – it will move the timeline scrubber as well!

Step 5: It’s time to split video online!

Once you’ve got the scrubber where you want it, you can cut the video at that point with just one click by pressing the ‘scissors’ icon:

Your video will split neatly in two at the exact point you chose:

If you only want the earlier or later part of the video, simply select the unwanted half and click the ‘delete’ Bin icon:

Or, if you want to use the other part of the video elsewhere you can move it to a new timeline. Simply click and drag the section of video upwards until you see a blue line appear on top of the old timeline, then let go and you’ll have two videos on two separate timelines.

Splitting  in Clipchamp also works with audio and image files

Note that the same works with audio tracks and photos you add to your editing project. You can cut these the same way you’re splitting videos as shown above. In the screenshot below, the light blue bars are title text and the purple bars are audio tracks. These all originated from 1 input audio file and where separated into multiple segments with our clip cutter tool.

Once you’re done editing, all that’s left is to export the finished video file to save it back to your computer.
